Happy New Year

Traditionally in the beginning of a New Year we inform you about DHL and the latest developments in holographic techniques, new software and developments related to 3D-modelling.

New Laser

In July we invested in a new high power laser and a high resolution Lcos beamer. With this laser we were able to produce the worlds largest computer generated hologram of 30 x 30cm (12 x 12”) on photo resist. The quality of the holographic image was improved by the in house build projector with the new high resolution Lcos-panel.

Diversify

Traditionally Dutch Holographic Laboratory B.V. produces holograms and holographic production equipment but our customers had also an increased interest in 3D lenticulars. We were not unfamiliar with this technique and have done several projects for both national as international clients with amazing results.

Thank you for making all of this possible!

The DHL-Crew Wishes you a happy New Year!

The dot-matrix-printer...

Dear Friend,

Traditionally in the beginning of a New Year we inform you about DHL and the latest developments in holographic techniques, new software, 3D- modeling and 3D scanners.

DHL holoprinters

This year DHL delivered two holoprinters to the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany. One was a custom built dot-matrix-printer. capable of producing up to 30 x 40 cm dot-matrix film or glass holograrns. Its now even possible for students with no particular knowledge of holography to make a hologram them selves from virtually any 2d graphics. Each dotmatrix hologram consists out Of up to 120.000 pixels of 1mm2 and can be produced in 20 — 30 hours.

The second holoprinter delivered was our DFCH holoprinter. capable of producing 30 x 40 cm glass transmission or reflection masters. Its user-friendly and automatic print process enables to make 3D computer graphics and animated holograms (200 frames) We think this is very interesting for the modern 3D computer graphics artists.

Waldemar Mattis-Teutsch

The Romanian artist Waldemar Mattis-Teutsch was honored the famous Shearwater Foundation holography Award. At the time this New Year letter was written a 50 x 60 cm reflection hologram is in production at our laboratory for Mr. Mattis-Teutsch. This reflection hologram called "the beat" is part of the artist's interest in 3D computer graphics and ways of displaying these computer graphics. Holography is a perfect way of showing real 3D to the public. and as far as we can tell at this moment it's going to be a very interesting hologram. Alive and kicking!

Quality Awards ande security hologram

We at DHL have produced many quality awards for the past ten years. The European Quality Award EFQM has been produced at our laboratory since 1992. and also this year companies all over Europe and Turkey received this prestigious award for their achievements in various disciplines. BVQI and Belden cables were two new clients who recognized holography's potential for anti counterfeit purposes and have integrated embossed holograms in their products.

Paper

One very nice article was published in our local newspaper, "Eindhovens Dagblad". In these series of articles "rare-professions" are displayed to the main public. Making holograms is a rather unusual and to most people not understood profession. As we call it ourselves "The magic of the third Dimension" makes of us magicians, so to speak.

Dieter Jung

In 2003 the book "Holographic Network" by professor Dieter Jung was published. This extensive book discusses the work of holographic artists worldwide. The computer generated embossed hologram "paging" on the cover of this book was made by DHL

3D-scanner

In 1997 in-house developed 3D Digiscanner is constantly underdevelopment. Digitizing objects has a broader application field then just holography only. Higher resolution and a better depth fault correction are the matters we are looking at this moment. We believe in the great potential of this scanner.

Other Developments

Several years ago a dmd-projector was brought and modified for the use in our holographic setup. This way of projecting images has great benefits in comparison with the formerly used photographic projection or lcd-displays. Noise reduction, sharper detailed holograms and time reduction etc are some of these major advantages. Although we are satisfied with these results we are constantlv finding ways of still improving the output, immediately effecting the final result; an even better hologram! As mentioned before, this year we developed and sold a custom built dot-matrix printer. The next development will be building of a 3-D dot matrix printer.

Digital Full Color Holoprinter in China

Digital Full Color Holoprinter in China In August 1997 the first DFCH-kit was installed in China. On location DHL also worked with the trainee to make the customer familiar with the unique DHoX holosoftware. Another example showing that DHL's services are not restricted to the EC and the USA.

Exhibition "Reliefs"

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art at Liege (Belgium), organized an exhibition on the third dimension in famous paintings and holograms. Spierings between Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso and Sol Lewitt. Whoooah! And what's better, a Spierings is still affordable.

Klokhuis

In February 1997, the Dutch broadcasting company NOB produced a documentary especially for children about the phenomenon holography. The making of a traditional hologram was recorded at our production facility and explained in a simple way. This was broadcasted in November 1997 and the increased interest in holography taught us that not only children, but adults as well watch this popular program! The Video Animated holograms in particular were very impressive on a television screen. One very exiting soccer scene showed the spectator the making of a winning goal. These VAH-holograms are still the only way to include 5 seconds of video into printed matter. In june 1999 there was a replay of the program and again Dutch interest in Holograms increased.

Erasmus: old book, new story

In the year 1997 the 375-year-old bronze sculpture of the famous Dutch humanist Erasmus fell down from its pedestal. The alarmed authorities approached DHL for advice on the possibility of making a 3D-computer model backup of this historical sculpture, just in case of future incidents. Well, in 1996 DHL's research and development already had developed and built a 3D scanner for our own purposes, including the necessary software. We convinced our client with a benchmark test on a wooden oriental statue. This statue will later be reproduced by use of the stereolithographic printing method. This rapid prototyping printing method reproduces a computer model into a real 3D-model by building slices of the outline with the aid of a laser into a photopolymer. After many days of preparation we scanned the 2,5 Meter high sculpture on location. In Eindhoven, the several separate scans were combined, successfully resulting in an exact 3D digital copy of Erasmus. This 3D scanning technique will surely be used in the artworld and its periphery. To enlarge small models by this method has become an interesting feature. And of course similar data is a perfect base for even more realistic holograms.

Region ambassador

DHL was elected Region Ambassador for the region Eindhoven for its outstanding and stimulating high tech research and development.

1995/1996

The Digital Full Color Holoprinter. Video Animated Holograms...

The year 1997 has begun, so by all means this is a good time to inform you about Dutch Holographic's newest breakthrough in Holography.

Video Animated Holograms

After we improved the Photo and Computer Generated Holograms we needed a new challenge; holograms with VIDEO INPUT. In the hologram you see the first result of our efforts. It is a sneak preview of what is going to be a very promising addition to the services we already offer.

Think of all the nice moments you can enclose in one moving hologram! Videoclips, wildlifesports, news items, movies, you name it!

Using our new DHoX holosoftware it is very easy to rapidly change depth, place, animation and colors. You can place separate video's in different layers as in the sample.

The video hologram contains up to 5 seconds of video images (125 frames). Although no real 3D data is used in this hologram, consider the impact on your customers.

Choose your best video moment, send it over and we produce these memorial seconds in large volume.

New Phone Number

Recently the Dutch telephone and fax numbers have changed to 10 digits. Especially our foreign customers may have had some difficulty in reaching our firm, so for good order these are the new contact information.

1994

Computer Generated Holograms...

New holographic technologies are developing fast. We at DHL thought the beginning of the new year would be a good time to bring you up to date.

The hologram of the Piano on the front is a perfect example of these new technologies. This image has been produced completely digitally. Designed on our Silicon Graphics workstations it was printed with the new DHL Digital full color Holoprinter. This printer automates the 2D/3D and full 3D master holograms generation for embossed holography.

The First Stone

In February the first stone was laid, by our former prime minister Ruud Lubbers, at the ambitious “Kop van Zuid” real estate project in Rotterdam. The stone was not real but recorded by DHL on a 50x60 cm reflection hologram! Three copies of the rare remnant of the medieval city rampart will be on display at the metro entrance in the building. This is the first Holographic “laying of the foundation stone” of which we know.

DHL goes digital

Since several years DHL not only produces holograms in the traditional way, but more and more the computer has become an important tool in making our Computer Generated Holograms. Our Silicon Graphics Workstations (SGI), the same one as used to create the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, allow us to make holograms with astonishing effects, as you will see.

Elvis Presley

By grabbing Elvis Presley from a videotape and using the latest 3D software and morphing techniques Elvis resurrected in a hologram; Elvis became alive! A few years ago this would only have been possible with the real Elvis. This clearly illustrates that the restrictions of early holography are over. With the new era of digital holoprinting “everything” is possible; like making your holiday snapshots become 3D.

Virtual images

The 3D computer design of objects and images are getting more accepted and used. Therefore holography is expanding itself from just a nice picture to a rapid virtual prototyping tool. In a joint project, a 50 x 60 cm reflection hologram of a computer model of a car dashboard was realized. The computer model being very realistic was rendered with shadows and the original texture map. The short production time to get a 3D view showed the usefulness in the designing processes.

Latest Quality Award

For many years we produce different Quality Awards. The early ones were made with real objects the traditional way. Later on it switched to photographic recording technique. The latest Holographic Quality Award, made for the “Instituut Nederlandse Kwaliteit”, is designed on the SGI in full color. This shows that the quality of our new technologies gradually will surpass the classic method.

Medical instruction hologram

An other way of getting the attention you want is illustrated by the Brexine hologram. Our client Christiaens Pharmaceuticals sells their new medicine using an explanation video tape. To get a better interaction and a presentation you won’t forget, they now use a Computer Generated Hologram in two colors with animation. The animation, 200 different views, starts with the medicine entering the stomach showing the dissolving parts floating to the stomach wall. Next, in the corners pops up a detailed view to show how the medicine enters the blood through the stomach wall.

Going ahead

Last August the two year governmental subsidizing program (PBTS) for the development of the Office Holoprinter ended. The result of the feasibility study is that we now proudly present multicolor holograms size 12 x 18 cm by the push of a button. One lucky visitor had his face holographed in only 17 minutes. All needed was a video camera, a SGI 3D workstation and the DHL Office Holoprinter.

These fabulous results and the positive reactions from 3D users directed us to complete the system for customer use. For the next phase, building a demonstration model, we entered a competition, called the BSI program of Senter, a department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. This time we ended fourth out of thirty companies entering the competition.

Expansion

To support our research projects we contracted three bright young men, introducing Eugène Rath, administration and network specialist, Geert-Jan Plattèl working on our SGI computers and the Office Holoprinter and Niels Govers responsible for the automation of the printers.

New techniques provide new possibilities. We invite you to use these new possibilities with holography for your marketing, or to previsualize your CAD designs rapidly in 3D.

1993

Analog, digital and dot holoprinter developments...

In keeping up with our annual tradition we would like to share our latest developments in holography with you. Together we have realized some amazing holographic projects to make automatic holography become reality. We have developed three new holographic machines which we introduced at Cebit in Hannover.

European Patent Office

In April Prof. Dieter Jung approached DHL with an ambitious project for the European Patent Office in Munich. A total of 18 m² (square meters) was produced and applied to a prism turner of 2,00 x 3,20 (times 3 makes 18 m²). The holograms were all unique in design. To promote and support this project, a full-color holographic computer-generated embossed hologram was produced.

Office of the Future

Our new computer graphics technology was used for several projects including the Office of the Future project from Chriet Titulaer, the visionary Dutch TV celebrity and entrepreneur. For the 2,000 opening cards DHL reduced the building 1,000 times into a hologram.

Quality Awards

DHL continues to produce the Awards for a range of clients, for instance Philips (PQA), European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), Broadcast Press (Media Scoop), Bedrijfsschap Stukadoors (Dry Wall Award), AKZO (Quality Award). These companies use holography for its dynamic and innovative appeal.

G.E.W Project

We were invited to prepare a proposal for a world unique holographic roof of 150 m², for G.E.W., the German Electricity Board. Because of uniqueness, nobody knew how the roof would look. Therefore, we showed G.E.W. a fly-through computer simulation of the site including a wide range of weather, lighting conditions and viewing positions, made on our SiliconGraphics workstations. With this simulation, we also have all the technical data in the 3D computer model to produce such an ambitious project.

Holoprinters

In March we displayed our Holoprinter® at Cebit at the ServoData booth of our Czech associates. Many people showed interest in our Office Holoprinter applications. As a result, we are now doing benchmark tests for 2 major world-wide companies.

Apart from our 2-step Holoprinter we have three new developments:

1.In San José,at SPIE's annual meeting, in February'93, we presented the results of our Office Holoprinter®,producing holograms from your computerdata in one easy step.

2.Our second major hardware development is the Dotprinter. European Optical Disc commissioned us to prepare holograms for CD Masters. We made several designs combined with our Dotprinter technique. This technique is scheduled for production in 1994. The Dotprinter pictures made in a drawing program like Coreldraw can be transferred to spectacular dynamic holographic colors. To introduce the Dotprinter, we have applied a sample on the front cover of this card. The image is built up out of 2.500 dot holograms. The technology can be easily adapted to CD's, packaging, security and paper embossing.

3.The third major hardware development is the full color embossing digital Holoprinter®. Images designed in the 3D Holosoftware TRACES can be automatically transferred into photoresist masters from which the embossed holographic stickers are produced. The hologram records the graphical computer data from an LCD screen. This is done under the achromatic angle to produce full color holograms. With this new technique pixels are invisible.

Thanks to you DHL is at the forefront of automating holography. Your vision and support was essential in achieving these innovations.

Next year we will commercialize the newly developed Holoprinters. These Holoprinters will be the future for holographic imaging. We look forward to working with you to realize your ideas with these new technologies.

1992

Glossary of Projects. Introduction of the MPGH Holoprinter...

At the end of an another exciting year, we want to summarize our activities in 1992 and look ahead in 1993.

Sevilla World-Expo

Using our fully automated MPGH system we produced four breath taken holograms for Philips, which were exhibited at the World-Expo in Sevilla, Spain. These holograms demonstrated the latest possibilities of holography. Besides a girl driving in her car other images were: a handheld telephone, a laptop computer and a fax through which the paper comes through, slowly revealing the text: "Communications talk with Philips".

Floriade

Together with Calibre, the computer visualisation group of the Technical University Eindhoven, department architecture we produced a unique full colour animated computer generated hologram. This is the first full colour reflection hologram in which colours change from left to right, through use of slowly changing texture maps.

Holoprinter

In March, we delivered the first Holoprinter to the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Köln. The printer is operated through a 386 PC. The control software is totally mouse-driven and runs under Windows 3.1, developed by D.H.L.. This is the first step towards the office Holoprinter.

Holosoftware "TRACES"

This software package developed by NeoGeo and D.H.L. was used to generate the first stock computer generated holograms commercially available to the public. Traces uses our SiliconGraphics 4D personal Iris workstation to it's limits. Real time 3D renderings are possible. Traces is not only ideal for 3D visualisation using holograms but also for "video" walkthroughs. Traces will be commercial available in the first quarter of 1993 from D.H.L..

Other Developments

In July we shot a MPGH hologram for CITIBANK Germany at one of their banks in Köln. The hologram shows a girl with her bankcard putting the card slowly into the machine and then operating the banking center machine. This is another excellent example of new hologram possibilities, which help to communicate your ideas clearly through holography possibilities.

In July, D.H.L. entered a subsidising competition, called PBTS, with the Office Holoprinter Project. The project received a 6th position (36 applications) and in November was therefore accepted (money is allocated in order of position, until there is none left). Part of this office Holoprinter project is the possibility to turn digital Video into 3D holographic images. To achieve this D.H.L. is investing in a SiliconGraphics computer with the fastest R4000 chip and a frame grabber.

The production of world wide firsts commercially available computer generated holograms and Holoprinter equipment would not have been possible without you. We thank you for your thrust in D.H.L. and for sharing our excitement on holography.

For next year we expect to develop the electronic interface for the office Holoprinter. A prototype will be ready in the fourth quarter of 1993.

With our new developed technology we expect to produce even more dramatic images which will help to communicate your ideas to your customers even better.
